Project Background

The homeowner reached out after noticing consistent plant decline along one side of her house. Several plants, including two 5-foot junipers and three yuccas, had died due to a fungal issue in the area. While her initial goal was to simply replace what was lost, she also wanted to improve the look of the space. The existing design relied heavily on evergreens and lacked color, but she was clear that she did not want anything that felt busy or overdone. The goal was to maintain a clean, polished look while introducing subtle seasonal color.

Objectives

AESTHETIC TRANSFORMATION:
Restore the structure of the bed while introducing controlled, elegant color that enhances the space without clutter.

FUNCTIONAL SPACE:
Select plant material that maintains a neat profile and does not require excessive pruning or long-term reshaping.

SUSTAINABILITY:
Replace failed plants with stronger, healthier specimens suited for the environment to reduce the risk of future loss.

Challenges

The area had previously experienced plant loss due to fungal issues, which required careful plant selection moving forward. The design also needed to strike a balance between adding color and maintaining a simple, refined appearance. Overplanting or using aggressive growers would have quickly made the space feel crowded and difficult to manage.

Solution

CUSTOM LANDSCAPE DESIGN:
We removed all dead plant material and evaluated the space to ensure proper reset conditions. To reestablish structure, we installed two 7-foot junipers, providing height and a strong evergreen backbone.

HARDSCAPING AND SOFTSCAPING:
To introduce color without adding bulk, we installed three coral drift roses. These were selected specifically for their low, controlled growth habit. They stay compact, do not become overly bushy, and provide consistent blooms from early spring through late fall.

SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES:
We sourced the healthiest plant material available from the nursery to ensure immediate visual impact and strong establishment. The chosen plant palette reduces maintenance while providing long-lasting performance and seasonal interest.

Results

VISUAL APPEAL:
The area now has a clean, balanced look with strong vertical structure and subtle color that enhances the home without overpowering it.

ENHANCED FUNCTIONALITY:
The new plants require minimal shaping and maintain their form naturally, keeping the space neat with less ongoing maintenance.

SUSTAINABILITY ACHIEVEMENTS:
Healthier plant selections and proper spacing reduce disease risk and improve long-term plant performance.

Conclusion

This project shows how small, intentional changes can completely elevate a space. By combining structure with controlled color, we created a landscape that feels polished, balanced, and easy to maintain while delivering strong curb appeal throughout the growing season.
