The homeowner wanted to upgrade their outdoor space with a natural, high-end pathway that would not only enhance the appearance of the property but also perform well over time. Traditional hardscape options like concrete were not ideal due to concerns about cracking and drainage. They were looking for a long-lasting solution that blended seamlessly with the landscape while maintaining structural integrity.
During the early stages of the project, we also uncovered underlying irrigation issues hidden beneath compacted mulch, which had been contributing to erosion and instability. This required quick communication and problem-solving to ensure the final installation would perform as intended.
AESTHETIC TRANSFORMATION:
Create a refined, natural-looking pathway that enhances the property’s overall design and adds long-term visual appeal.
FUNCTIONAL SPACE:
Construct a stable, well-draining surface that improves accessibility while preventing future settling, shifting, or erosion.
SUSTAINABILITY:
Utilize a permeable base system that allows water to naturally infiltrate the ground, reducing runoff and supporting long-term soil health.
The project required deep excavation and precise base preparation to ensure long-term stability. In addition, unexpected irrigation leaks were discovered beneath the surface, which had been contributing to soil erosion and compromised conditions. These issues had to be addressed before continuing with the installation to prevent future failure of the pathway system.
CUSTOM LANDSCAPE DESIGN:
We began by excavating approximately 12 inches below grade to establish a strong foundation. A non woven geotextile fabric was installed to separate native soil from aggregate layers and prevent future settling. We then installed a 3/4 inch fractured stone base, compacted in multiple passes to create a solid structural layer.
A 1 inch layer of 3/8 inch clean granite chips was added and carefully leveled to create a precise setting bed. Each piece of flagstone was then individually placed, cut, and adjusted by hand to ensure consistent spacing and a clean, intentional layout.
HARDSCAPING AND SOFTSCAPING:
Decorative granite was integrated into the surrounding areas to complement the flagstone and create a cohesive look. A permanent edge restraint system was installed to lock the pathway in place, and permeable joint material was applied between stones. The entire surface was compacted and activated with water to ensure long-term stability.
To prepare for future needs, we installed two PVC expansion sleeves beneath the pathway, allowing for future upgrades without disturbing the finished surface.
SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES:
The permeable construction system allows water to pass through the surface and into the ground, reducing runoff and minimizing erosion. Compared to traditional concrete, this flexible system adapts better to soil movement and can be easily maintained or repaired if needed.
IRRIGATION REPAIR INTEGRATION:
When hidden irrigation leaks were discovered, our team immediately notified the homeowner and received approval to proceed with repairs. We repaired broken lines, replaced damaged spray heads, and removed unnecessary heads to improve system efficiency. Addressing these issues ensured the integrity of both the landscape and the new installation.

VISUAL APPEAL:
The finished pathway delivers a clean, natural aesthetic with strong visual contrast and a high-end feel that enhances the entire property.
ENHANCED FUNCTIONALITY:
The new pathway provides a stable, well-draining surface that improves accessibility while eliminating previous erosion concerns.
SUSTAINABILITY ACHIEVEMENTS:
The permeable system reduces water runoff, supports healthier soil conditions, and provides a long-term solution that requires less maintenance than traditional hardscape.
This project highlights the importance of proper installation techniques and attention to detail. By combining a premium permeable flagstone system with proactive problem-solving, OAK Outdoors delivered a pathway that is not only visually striking but built to perform for years to come.
