Project Background

Earlier in the year, we recommended to this Nichols Hills homeowner that an outdoor lighting system would dramatically elevate their backyard experience. Before lighting, the yard disappeared into darkness at night, and none of the beautiful landscape features could be appreciated. With large windows overlooking the yard, the client wanted their outdoor space to feel alive after sunset, not hidden in shadow. After conversations and planning, they trusted our team to bring the backyard to life with elegant and intentional illumination.

Objectives

AESTHETIC TRANSFORMATION:
Create a warm, luxurious glow that adds ambiance, beauty, and nighttime interest to the backyard.

FUNCTIONAL SPACE:
Enhance visibility and enjoyment of the yard during nighttime hours, while also improving the view from inside the home.

SUSTAINABILITY:
Install an energy efficient, smart controlled lighting system designed to be automated, long lasting, and expandable for the future.

Challenges

The backyard previously had no illumination, meaning every feature disappeared at night. We needed to design a system that highlighted focal trees, softly illuminated surrounding plants, and created depth using strategic light placement without flooding the space with harsh lighting. The client also wanted future expandability, so the system infrastructure needed thoughtful planning.

Solution

CUSTOM LIGHTING DESIGN:
We designed a subtle but powerful lighting plan focused on highlighting natural features instead of overpowering them.

HARDSCAPING AND SOFTSCAPING INTEGRATION:
Our team installed
• 3 uplights on three beautiful columnar oak trees
• 2 uplights on two crape myrtles

The residual glow gently highlights surrounding garden beds and plants. Lights were intentionally positioned so tree shadows are cast across the fence, adding depth, drama, and visual interest at night.

SMART AND FUTURE READY SYSTEM:
We installed electrical conduit under the lawn to allow future expansion. The lighting system is fully automated and turns on at sunset and off at sunrise. It can also be manually controlled through the client’s smartphone. Our team also helped integrate the system so the landscape lighting and the home’s security lights operate together.

Results

VISUAL APPEAL:
The backyard transformed from dark and unused at night into a beautiful nighttime feature. The illuminated trees create depth, warmth, and an elegant glow.

ENHANCED FUNCTIONALITY:
The homeowner can now enjoy their backyard after dark, both while relaxing indoors with a view and while spending time outside.

SUSTAINABILITY ACHIEVEMENTS:
The system is energy efficient, automated, and expandable, which increases long term value while reducing waste.

Conclusion

This Nichols Hills lighting project is a perfect example of how a little lighting can make a big impact. Thoughtful placement, smart technology, and intentional design turned a dark backyard into a stunning nighttime showcase that the homeowner truly enjoys.
