The homeowner was experiencing constant water pooling in a low-lying corner near their backyard patio. This issue occurred both during heavy rain and whenever the irrigation system was in use, making the space difficult to enjoy and posing risks to the surrounding hardscape and plantings. They sought a permanent, professional drainage solution that would integrate with their existing system and prevent damage to their outdoor living area.
AESTHETIC TRANSFORMATION:
While the project was primarily functional, the client wanted the drainage system to blend seamlessly with the existing patio and landscaping, ensuring no disruption to the visual appeal of their backyard.
FUNCTIONAL SPACE:
Eliminate standing water so the patio and surrounding area could be fully enjoyed for relaxation and entertaining without concern for mud, flooding, or erosion.
SUSTAINABILITY:
Implement a drainage solution that effectively manages stormwater and irrigation runoff without harming the landscape or contributing to erosion.
The water pooling was caused by the natural slope of the yard, which funneled runoff into the patio corner. The existing French drain system was functional but didn’t extend to this problem area. We needed to install a basin and connect it to the current system without disrupting established landscaping or hardscaping.
CUSTOM DESIGN:
We strategically placed a French drain basin at the lowest point of the affected area to capture water immediately. This basin was connected to the existing French drain system via a newly installed 40-foot section of corrugated pipe.
HARDSCAPING & SOFTSCAPING:
The installation was completed with minimal disturbance to existing patio stonework and garden beds. Any displaced turf was restored for a clean, seamless finish.
SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES:
By channeling excess water directly to the street, the system prevents oversaturation of soil, reduces erosion risk, and maintains healthy growing conditions for surrounding plants.
VISUAL APPEAL:
The final installation blended into the backyard’s existing design, with no visible disruption to the landscaping or patio area.
ENHANCED FUNCTIONALITY:
The patio is now free of water pooling, making it usable in all weather conditions and preventing long-term damage to hardscape and plant roots.
