Acer platanoides ‘Crimson Sentry’ is a compact Norway maple with a dense, upright shape. Its purple-maroon leaves remain colorful throughout the growing season before developing reddish-bronze tones in the fall. Its narrower growth habit makes it useful where a traditional maple would become too large.

This section shows how the plant will fit into your yard and into your life.

Seasonal Interest:

Deep burgundy-purple foliage from spring through summer, followed by maroon, bronze and reddish fall color

Landscape Uses:

Front-yard focal points, narrow planting areas, driveway borders, landscape islands and vertical accents

Allergy Considerations:

Low to moderate during the spring pollen season

Kid/Pet Safety:

Generally considered a low concern around children, dogs and cats. As with any landscape plant, leaves and seeds should not be intentionally consumed.

Mess Factor:

Low to moderate. The tree drops leaves in fall and may produce winged maple seeds.

Maintenance Level:

Low. Occasional pruning may be needed to remove damaged branches or maintain its upright form.

This section covers practical care information for homeowners.

Water Needs:

Moderate. Water deeply and consistently during establishment and during extended periods of Oklahoma heat or drought.

Soil Tolerance:

Adaptable to clay and other common landscape soils, but performs best in moist, well-drained conditions. Avoid areas that remain waterlogged.

Drought Tolerance:

Moderate once established. Supplemental watering helps reduce stress and leaf scorch during hot, dry weather.

Deer Resistance:

Variable. Young trunks may need protection from browsing or antler rubbing.

Pest/Disease Resistance:

Moderate. Generally dependable, but drought stress and extreme heat may cause leaf scorch. Proper watering, planting depth and drainage help maintain long-term health.
